Rattlebag x Re.mix.er

A Rhythm to Clap to brings together the work of father and son, Ray Gillespie (b.1955) and Neil Gillespie (b.1986), exploring painting as both a shared language and a way of finding your own voice.

Both artists draw inspiration from the natural world and their surroundings, translating what they see through an instinctive approach to paint. Their work sits between the figurative and abstract, with recognisable forms emerging through layers, texture and arrangement. For Neil, painting is closely connected to his relationship with his father. Ray’s practice and distinctive way of seeing have been an early and lasting influence on Neil, who has since developed his own more experimental, collage-like approach to form and composition.

There is a generosity and playfulness to both bodies of work. Their naïve qualities make the paintings open and approachable, inviting the viewer to look closely but also to simply enjoy their colour, gesture and sense of place.

A Rhythm to Clap to celebrates what can be passed between generations — a desire to create, an attentiveness to the landscape, and the freedom to make without taking things too seriously. It is a celebration of similarity and difference, influence and independence, but above all, the shared joy of painting.

Rattlebag x Sunday Service
Sunday Service returns this weekend with music from Martin Guy is a Belfast-based DJ, curating intimate nights throughout the city over the past two years that combine his love of house, electronic, and live music. This love formed the basis of his first event, “Machine Yearning”, which originally saw local electronic pioneers rub shoulders with Belfast-based Beat’n’Drum samba band. An unwavering admiration for Kate Bush, on the other hand, saw Martin curate “Sounds of Love”, which brought the die-hard fans out from the woodworks to a packed-out Green Room. He also presented “Dance of the Atoms” back in March at Sound Advice, which was equal parts science lecture/love letter to the turntable and how scientists use the same principles to see the literal building blocks of the Universe! More recent outings include a coveted set at Plan B with Patrick Turner and a 6-hour vinyl soiree in Downings, Donegal, alongside Conleth Forde and Aaron Sweeney.
